Application Requirement – State Board Exam (for DVMs & RVTs)
The Louisiana State Jurisprudence Exam is required for all DVM applicants (excluding DVM Faculty License applicants). Additionally, RVT applicants who submitted their application on/after October 20th, 2022 will be required to take and pass the jurisprudence exam. The examination consists of twenty-six (26) questions designed to test an applicant’s familiarity with the laws and regulations governing the practice of veterinary medicine in the state of Louisiana. A passing score of 70% or more on the exam is required for licensure. The LBVM offers the state jurisprudence exam in two different methods. Applicants can take the state board exam either: 1) in-person at the LBVM office (unless another location is stated for an exam date) or 2) online through the AAVSB’s State and Provincial Assessments (SPA) program.
Note: Current students enrolled in a DVM or Veterinary Technology program are eligible to take the state jurisprudence exam once they are within 60 days from their date of graduation as reported on the Anticipated Date of Graduation Form submitted during the application process.

Exam Option #1 -- Online

One must complete the following steps to sign up to take the Louisiana state board exam online through AAVSB’s testing services. Please note that there is an additional vendor fee of $55 that must be paid to AAVSB/TesTrac once you log into the online test.
1. Submit application and fees for Licensure – An applicant for licensure in Louisiana must first complete the appropriate licensure application and pay all necessary fees, including the State Board Exam fee. AT MINIMUM, the following supplemental documents must be submitted in order to sign up for the state jurisprudence exam: certificate of graduation OR copy of diploma/transcript.
2. Sign up for online exam – Complete the short form below to sign up for the online State Jurisprudence Exam. (If the form does not load on this page below, you can access it directly at https://www.powr.io/form-builder/i/31773382#page.)
3. LBVM approves exam eligibility – Once you have submitted the LBVM application, supplemental documents, payment and completed the signup form above, the LBVM will send your exam approval to AAVSB. You will receive an email confirmation from the Board (admin@lsbvm.org) notifying you that your approval has been sent to AAVSB.

5. Follow steps in email from online testing vendor – Once AAVSB receives your approval from the Board, your state board exam eligibility/login email will be sent to you from TesTrac (@testrac.com), the online testing vendor. Be sure to save this domain – @testrac.com – as a safe domain so you won’t miss timely emails. You should also regularly check your spam/junk folder to see if the email gets sent there. The email from TesTrac will include your Logon ID and Password information to access the TesTrac link on the AAVSB webpage.
You have signed up for the online State Jurisprudence Exam, now what?

- The LBVM will send an updated list of approved candidates who are approved to sit for the state jurisprudence exam to the AAVSB every afternoon.
- Applicants will have 60 days to complete the exam once you receive the eligibility/login email from TesTrac. If your assignment expires, please email spa@aavsb.org requesting your exam to be reset.
- After you have logged in, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “I accept these terms and conditions,” after reading through them.
- Once you start the exam, you will have thirty (30) minutes to complete it.
- Click on the exam “Assigned to me”.
- You will then pay the third-party vendor fee of $55 by credit card. This fee is separate from the LBVM’s application and exam fees. All major credit cards are accepted.
- The exam is open book and consists of twenty-six (26) multiple choice and true/false questions. You can download the study guide by clicking here. You should also read through the LA Veterinary Practice Act available at www.lsbvm.org/practice-act.
- You will be provided a Pass or Fail at the end of the exam.
- TesTrac will provide your score to the AAVSB every Tuesday, which will then be sent to the LBVM.
- You should continue to log into the LBVM Application Portal at www.lsbvm.org/applicationportal to check the status of your application and checklist of material.
- Should you fail the state jurisprudence exam and need to retake it, you will need to pay the LBVM State Board Exam Fee again as well as the $55 third party vendor fee. Contact the LBVM at admin@lsbvm.org for more details on retaking the state jurisprudence exam.

Exam Option #2 -- In-Person in LBVM Office

1. Submit application and fees for licensure – An applicant for licensure in Louisiana must first complete the appropriate licensure application and pay all necessary fees, including the State Board Exam fee. AT MINIMUM, the following supplemental documents must be submitted in order to sign up for the state jurisprudence exam: certificate of graduation OR copy of diploma/transcripts.
2. Determine which test date is desired – The State Board Examination is administered on the first Tuesday of every month (unless changed for weather/holiday). The deadline to sign up for the state board exam is two weeks prior to the examination date. No late applications will be accepted. The examination is given at the LBVM’s main office at 5825 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA 70806, located in the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Building. The examination starts at 10:00am (central) unless applicant is specifically informed otherwise. The state board exam dates for the remaining of 2023 are as follows:

RETAKING STATE BOARD EXAM OPTIONS
If the state jurisprudence exam is not successfully passed, one must sign up to retake the exam.
1. Resubmit the exam signup request form. Submit application and fees for Licensure – Complete the form below to sign up to retake the State Jurisprudence Exam. (If the form does not load on this page below, you can access it directly at https://www.powr.io/form-builder/i/31773382#page.)
2. Pay state exam fee – Once your official exam score is received from AAVSB by the Board, a new invoice will be created in the LBVM Application Portal that must be paid in order for you to be approved to retake the state board exam. The LBVM state board exam fee ($200 for DVMs; $40 for RVTs) must be paid for all exam attempts. Please note that there is an additional vendor fee of $55 that must be paid to AAVSB/TesTrac if you choose to retake the exam online. (This will be due when you sign up with AAVSB.)
3. LBVM approves exam eligibility – Once the invoice has been paid, you will be approved to retake the state exam. More details will be emailed to you once you are approved.
