DVM Application Instructions – Applicant for NAVLE Only

Back to DVM Applicant Type List

Application Requirements | Application Instructions | LBVM Applicant Portal | Checking Status

STEP #1 IS TO COMPLETE AND SUBMIT THE ONLINE APPLICATION THROUGH THE LBVM APPLICATION PORTAL. All supplemental documentation can be submitted through the portal AFTER the application is initially submitted. The LBVM cannot guarantee that documents submitted PRIOR to the submission of the online application can be accepted and/or tracked.

    • Photograph – A recent head & shoulders photograph (passport style).
    • Diploma/Transcript OR Certificate of Anticipated Graduation – A copy of all your official SVM Diploma/Transcript OR Certificate of Anticipated Graduation (download here). A final transcript or copy of your diploma must be submitted after you complete your DVM program.
*NOTE: LSU SVM students do NOT need to submit the Certificate of Anticipated Graduation form. The LSU SVM Student Affairs Office submits a list of graduation candidates each year, which the LBVM will use to meet this requirement for applicants in the LSU SVM’s Class of 2023.
    • Declarations – Additional documentation may be required related to any “yes” responses in the declaration section of the application.

Submitting the completed application, supplemental documents and applicable fees through the LBVM Application Portal will allow you to register to take the NAVLE through ICVA. Once you have completed the LBVM application, you will need to apply online with ICVA at www.icva.net or call 701-224-0332 for more details. The LBVM application is separate from the NAVLE application, which should be submitted directly to ICVA. Fourth-year DVM students may take the NAVLE examination in the fall or spring. To be eligible to take the State Board Exam, an applicant must demonstrate that he is a graduate of an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or is eligible for graduation within not less than 60 days of the date of the exam.

Need Testing Accommodations? If you are a candidate with a documented disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and require test accommodations, please indicate on both your NAVLE application. If you would like to request any testing accommodations, you must check the box on your initial application form to indicate that you intend to seek accommodations for the applicable testing cycle. If you submit an application without indicating the need for accommodations and receive a permit for standard format testing, you will not be permitted to seek accommodations for the testing cycle in question absent extraordinary circumstances. All requests for accommodations must be approved by the ICVA. Due to the length of the standard NAVLE (7.5 hours), accommodations of extended testing time and/or more frequent breaks require two testing days. If you are applying for NAVLE approval through the Canadian National Examining Board (NEB), and you have a documented disability for which you will be seeking test accommodations, you must contact the NEB office directly for information regarding their NAVLE accommodation request process (phone 613.236.1162 x123). It takes time to review the documentation necessary to approve test accommodations, so submission of application and accommodation materials early is encouraged. Click here for additional information on requesting testing accommodations for the NAVLE.

At minimum, in order for our office to send approvals for the NAVLE to ICVA so you can sign up and take the NAVLE, current students must: 1) complete all sections of the application, make payment, and upload the Certificate of Anticipated Graduation. We can then get students approved for the NAVLE while they work on the remaining required documentation below (such as the letters of reference, etc).

Other documents that must be submitted directly to the LBVM after you have submitted your application and paid your fees above will include:

    • Letters of Reference – Three “Reference of Personal and Professional Character” forms must be submitted to the Board – at least two from licensed veterinarians not related to you and one from another professional who can attest to your professional capabilities and ethical standards. The reference forms can be downloaded here. The reference form must be given to your reference writers and sent directly to the LBVM by the reference writer upon completion.
    • Official SVM Transcripts – Official transcripts must be sent directly from your SVM to the LBVM office once you complete your DVM program, even if you uploaded a copy into the LBVM Applicant Portal.
    • NAVLE Exam Score – Applicants for NAVLE testing are also encouraged to read through the ICVA’s NAVLE website at www.icva.net/navle. To be approved to take the NAVLE through Louisiana, one must apply to ICVA and also submit the LBVM’s application for licensure! ICVA must receive approval from the LBVM before one can sit for the NAVLE. The application deadlines can be found at www.lsbvm.org/deadlines. Once you take the NAVLE, you must submit a request directly to ICVA to have your score(s) sent to the LBVM from ICVA. Please contact ICVA for more information at www.icva.net or call 701-224-0332.

Fees Associated with the DVM Application for NAVLE Only – At the end of the online application, you will be asked to pay the fees as described below:
