Examinations – State Jurisprudence (for DVMs & RVTs)
Eligibility Requirements:
For Recent RVT and DVM Graduates:
- The Board must receive at minimum your submitted application and payment of fees as well as a copy of your DVM diploma OR official transcript.
For Currently Enrolled RVT and DVM Students:
- Currently enrolled RVT students and DVM students are eligible to take the state jurisprudence exam once they are within 60 days from their date of graduation.
- Students enrolled in any of the following veterinary technology programs in Louisiana — 1) Baton Rouge Community College, 2) Delgado Community College, 3) Northwestern State University of LA, or 4) Northshore Technical Community College — may NOT need to submit the Anticipated Date of Graduation Form since a list of all eligible graduates is submitted to the Board directly from the Vet Tech programs.
- Students enrolled in the DVM program at the LSU SVM do NOT need to submit the Anticipated Date of Graduation Form since a list of all eligible graduates is submitted to the Board from the LSU SVM.
- All students not enrolled in one of the five Louisiana schools listed above must download and submit the Anticipated Date of Graduation Form in order to sit for the state board exam within 60 days of graduation.
The state board exam is independent from the NAVLE and can be taken either before or after the NAVLE is completed.
How Would You Like to Take Exam?
The 30-minute examination consists of twenty-six (26) multiple choice questions designed to test an applicant’s familiarity with the laws and regulations governing the practice of veterinary medicine in Louisiana. A passing score of 70% or more on the exam is required for licensure.

What Happens If I Don’t Pass the State Board Exam?
If the state jurisprudence exam is not successfully passed, one must sign up to retake the exam. There is no limit to the number of attempts for the state board exam.
If you fail the state board exam and wish to retake it, you must email the LBVM Office at admin@lsbvm.org to make this request. A new invoice will be created in the LBVM Application Portal that must be paid in order for you to be approved to retake the state board exam. The LBVM state board exam fee ($200 for DVMs; $40 for RVTs) must be paid for all exam attempts. There will also be an additional vendor fee of $50 that must be paid to AAVSB if you choose to retake the exam online. (This will be due when you sign up with AAVSB for the retake.
For How Long is a Score Valid for the State Exam?
While applications for licensure and certification are only valid for one year from the submission date, state jurisprudence exam scores are valid for a period of five years from the date the examination was completed.
