Examinations – State Board, Online Option


Step #1. Submit Application, Fees & Educational Documents to Board

One can only take the online examination once the application and payment has been submitted along with either the Anticipated Date of Graduation Form or a copy of the DVM or Vet Tech degree or official transcript.


Step #2. Complete Exam Sign-Up Form

You will receive notification in the LBVM Application Portal when you are then able to complete and submit the Exam Sign-Up Form.

Once received, the Board office will send your exam approval to AAVSB, the testing vendor and you will receive an email confirmation from the Board (admin@lsbvm.org) notifying you that your approval has been sent to AAVSB.

The LBVM sends an updated list of approved candidates who are approved to sit for the state jurisprudence exam to the testing vendor (AAVSB) every afternoon.


Step #3. Get Set Up with AAVSB

Once AAVSB receives your approval from the Board, you will receive an email with instructions to pay the $50 vendor testing fee.

After payment is made, the link to the online state jurisprudence exam will be provided on your payment receipt. You will be required to create a login on the site, and  will need to use the same email address and name that you listed on your LBVM application to access the online exam.


Step #4. Prepare for Exam

Download and review the Exam Study Guide, the LA Veterinary Practice Act, the Louisiana Administrative Code, and the complimentary statutes below.

What To Expect After Completing the Exam?

The official score results must be received by the Board directly from AAVSB. Your LBVM Application Portal will be updated once your score is received. It typically takes 5-7 business days to receive official scores; however, holidays may delay this process.

  • If the state board exam was the last thing needed to complete your application, the LBVM Office will email you an Application Update Form to complete as your final step.
  • If you are still missing application materials, the Application Update Form will not be emailed to you until all other required materials have been submitted and approved.

The Application Update Form is used to ensure all contact details and employment details are up-to-date prior to the final review of your application packet.

What Happens If I Don’t Pass the State Board Exam?

If the state jurisprudence exam is not successfully passed, one must sign up to retake the exam. There is no limit to the number of attempts for the state board exam.

If you fail the state board exam and wish to retake it, you must email the LBVM Office at admin@lsbvm.org to make this request. A new invoice will be created in the LBVM Application Portal that must be paid in order for you to be approved to retake the state board exam. The LBVM state board exam fee ($200 for DVMs; $40 for RVTs) must be paid for all exam attempts. There will also be an additional vendor fee of $50 that must be paid to AAVSB if you choose to retake the exam online. (This will be due when you sign up with AAVSB for the retake.

For How Long is a Score Valid for the State Exam?

While applications for licensure and certification are only valid for one year from the submission date, state jurisprudence exam scores are valid for a period of five years from the date the examination was completed.
