Renewing an Expired DVM License
How Long Can a DVM License Remain Expired?
Rule §305.B of the Louisiana Administrative Code (LAC 46:LXXXV) provides that a license which has expired may be renewed within five years of the date of its expiration by submitting an application for renewal which meets the following conditions:
- application for renewal must be received;
- full payment of current renewal fee must be received;
- full payment of delinquent annual renewal fees must be received;
- full payment of late fees for delinquent license renewal(s) must be received;
- all satisfactory documentation of compliance with continuing education requirements, for the current year and all delinquent years, in accordance with Chapter 4 must be received; and
- if applicable, late continuing education fee(s) must be received for the current year and all delinquent years.
Pursuant to LA Revised Statute 37:1525, after five years have elapsed since the date of expiration, a DVM license may not be renewed. If the license is not renewed prior to the end of the five-year period, the license shall be permanently removed from the board’s rolls and that the holder shall be required to make application for a new license.
How to Renew Your Expired DVM License:
1. Continuing Education Requirements
Rule §407.A states that persons who wish to renew an expired license within five years from the date of expiration must submit satisfactory documentation of compliance for each year for which the license was not renewed. Where insufficient hours have been acquired, the board may require additional hours to be obtained as a condition of licensure and/or as a condition of renewal for the next fiscal year.
Once the number of CE hours required has been determined, you will receive further instruction from the Board’s office on how to properly report the hours and upload the required documentation into the LBVM License Portal. All delinquent CE hours must be uploaded into LBVM License Portal for final review by the Board’s Office.
How Many CE Hours Must I Complete?
Twenty (20) hours are required for each year in which your DVM license was expired. All rules regarding continuing education requirements still apply and must be met.
Please contact the LBVM Office at admin@lsbvm.org to determine exactly how many continuing education hours are required to renew your expired license.
2. Update Your Profile Details
You must log into LBVM License Portal and update your details under the “Profile” menu section, including:
- Personal information (contact details, etc)
- Employment history
- Education history
- Licenses held in other jurisdictions
3. Complete the Renewal Application
Once all of your CE activity has been reported to and approved by the Board office, you will then be cleared to complete and submit the renewal application, including making payment for the current renewal fees and all delinquent annual renewal fees for each year in which your license was in an expired status as well as late continuing education fee(s) – if applicable – for the current year and all delinquent years.
- log into LBVM License Portal;
- click on the “License Renewal” menu option;
- click “Start Renewal”; then,
- on the step #2, you will select the “DVM – Active” option for your destination status type.
- follow the instructions in each of the remaining steps of the renewal application, clicking “Save & Continue” to move forward;
- on the last step, make payment and submit the renewal! The renewal amount will be automatically calculated on your invoice.
How Much Will I Owe?
The $150 late renewal fee is assessed for each year in which your license was expired in addition to the normal $250 renewal fee.
When you contact the Board’s office regarding how much CE you owe, you will be given more details as to the exact total that will be owed for renewing an expired license.
Any invoices for additional fees required – such as back payments for expired renewals will be available on the last step of the renewal application.
Payment can be made online via credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), via ACH payment or via paper check once all renewal information is entered and submitted.
