Composition & Qualifications

The Board is comprised of five members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Board members in discharge of their duties are also held to the ethical standards of state government officials. The Board meets six times per calendar year in meetings open to the public. The Board’s administrative staff handles day-to-day functions of the Board which includes consumer outreach, application for and renewal of licensure, regulatory enforcement, and much more.

By statute, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA) nominates three or more qualified persons for each annual vacancy and forwards these nominations to the Governor for appointment. In accordance with La. R.S. 37:1515, a person shall be qualified to serve as a member of the board if he is a graduate of a veterinary school, a resident of this state, and has been licensed to practice veterinary medicine in this state for the five years immediately preceding the time of his appointment. Additionally, no person may serve on the board who is or was during the two years immediately preceding his appointment, a member of the faculty, trustee or advisory board of a veterinary school. It is not necessary to be a member of the LVMA to be nominated.

While Board members may hold general membership in a professional association, they are legally and ethically bound to their Oath of Office and will discharge their duties without any considerations or goals beyond their lawful obligations on the Board. Board members do not represent the interests of the practitioners of veterinary medicine or a professional association while they serve on the Board, nor will they use their office to engage in any conduct which may constitute restraint of lawful trade.
