INTRODUCTION TO THE LOUISIANA VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT
The Practice Act booklet contains sections of legal
information as follows:
I. Louisiana Veterinary Practice Act
The Practice Act contains the statutes (laws) passed by the Louisiana
legislature to create the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners for the
purpose of regulating the profession of veterinary medicine. The Practice
Act is sub-divided into sections which cover the practice of veterinary
medicine by doctors of veterinary medicine, registered veterinary
technicians, certified animal euthanasia technicians, and registered
equine dentists.
II. Louisiana Administrative Code. Professional and
Occupational Standards
These rules (regulations) are written and published (promulgated) by
the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine to enhance and codify its
ability to ensure that the statutes of the Practice Act are followed.
Although rules carry less weight than statutes, they are still considered
legal requirements to be followed by members of the professions governed
by the Board.
III. Complementary Laws
Other statutes are passed by the legislature which effect those
persons regulated by the Board of Veterinary Medicine. This section
contains selected laws in which the Board finds that licensees frequently
have questions.
STUDY GUIDE OF THE PRACTICE ACT, BOARD RULES AND
COMPLEMENTARY LAWS FOR THE STATE BOARD EXAMINATION
The Louisiana State Board Examination is taken from
statutes found in the Veterinary Practice Act, rules (regulations) found
in the Louisiana Administrative Code, and statutes found elsewhere in the
Louisiana Revised Statutes which are deemed to be of importance to a newly
licensed practitioner of veterinary medicine. The State Board Examination
(SBE) must be passed before a license to practice veterinary medicine in
Louisiana will be issued by the Board.
The following study guide indicates the topic areas
within the Veterinary Practice Act book from which the questions on the
SBE are derived. The reference to applicable statutes and rules is
provided to assist you in preparing for the examination.
